Long Summer Ahead

We met up with the Hoyt's at the park this afternoon.  I used the outing as a giant bribe all day long for Mr Hugo.  I needed something to hold his attention to keep him on track with listening to me.   A trip to the park to play with Amy and Hannah was the golden ticket.

Today was also the day to have the staple removed from the back of his head.  Really, we could have done it yesterday after school, but he was scared and I wasn't sure what to tell him, if it would hurt removing the staple or not.  I guess neither of us were mentally prepared to have the silly staple come out yesterday.  He did a grand old job of freaking his classmates and teacher out with all the head scratching and pulling of the staple in class yesterday.  He hasn't touched it at home.  Barely tolerates me to part his hair for a peek.  Somehow or other he managed to twist the staple around in his scalp, the Doc had to untwist it quick before he could use his dandy tool to remove it.  The staple was out in a flash and the staff sweetly prepared not one but three balloons for us, the girls came along for this quick trip.  I can't say enough about what a trooper Hugo was.  I believe he was full on prepared for the worst.  He stretched himself out flat on the table, held one of my hands tight, squeezed his eyes shut and held super still.  Hugo is my brave boy.

The girls loved the park.  Loved, loved, looooved the park!  More and more Miss Sabine is proving to me just how fearless and determined she is.   Marlo I don't feel I have a complete picture of.  She keeps surprising me, so more on her in the future.  I can see ..........Hold your horses, Marlo just flushed the toilet for the first time.  She is crying now.......  What I was going to say is that this is going to be a long summer for me.  I am going to be running a lot.  I am going to be saying, "No, no, no..." a lot.  I am hoping that my heart wont have cause to skip too many beats.  I think I need a massive baby gate.  And baby leashes.  With loud bells.

56 Degrees

It was a balmy 56 degrees outside today and felt super wonderful to this house arrest body. I loaded the girls into their car seats and stroller for their very first short ride over to the neighbors. Surprise, surprise on me. They were in the middle of getting all dolled up to attend the SPCA Fur Ball. Huh... a fur ball. Interesting.

Home again, home again we strolled on down the road.

Choices

We love our yard. It has a very unique shape so that it has many different areas within it. This can be interesting and beautiful. It is also a lot of work. I still enjoy working in the yard, don't get me wrong. It's just that around 3pm today as I surveyed the tasks that I had completed it wasn't so impressive. I've been working my tail off outside and I'm not sure anyone would have a clue as to what I've done. There is no end to the amount of work needed to keep our jungle of a property in line. My house needs a complete spring cleaning on the inside. I feel torn between continuing with the yard work and my spring cleaning chores. The yard is winning the battle at the moment. I am dividing beds of flowers and plants which must be done now. They seem to be growing an inch or two each evening and soon it will be too late to divide them. I also want to put in some seeds for salad greens and other summer vegetables.

Hugo is an outside boy. In the morning, once I tell him we need to hurry and get dressed so that we can go outside, he comes running. Before going out the door we sit on the steps and pull on our boots. He loves, loves his boots. They are by far his favorite article of clothing. He can now say "boot" and "pull". He doesn't yet get that there are rocks in the garden for walking on. He sorta makes his own paths. Zig zags this way and that as I quietly freak out over my baby plants being trampled by his camo boots. I've tried over and over to explain how fun it can be to hop from rock to rock. Hugo has translated this to mean from plant to plant.

Our Afternoon Outdoors

Hugo and I marched like toy soldiers around the yard this afternoon. I have been reading to him an updated version of The Little Engine that Could. The artist included an adorable toy soldier which you kinda have to look for in the train. Hugo recently spied the soldier and has been attracted to him ever since. Something new. Usually he is content pointing out the balls, the cow, the giraffes, the elephant and the different trains, all the while making a "Whooo, whoooooo " sound. By the way, that is for the trains. So now, we point out and make the sounds and/or actions for the balls, the cow, the giraffes, the elephant, the different trains, the toy soldier and oh yeah, an ice cream cone. He hasn't even had an ice cream cone yet! So I wonder why he is drawn to it in this book? How does he know that the ice cream cone could possibly be tasty, or is it just the semi-ball shape that he is into? I'm beginning to think they arrive on earth preprogrammed knowing all about sweets. Candy colors, shapes and fun packaging - Hugo has it all figured out.
