Words From A Prophet

"My message to you today is to live the gospel.  Cultivate in your hearts a testimony and a love for God, your Eternal Father.  We sing, 'I am a Child of God.'  That isn't just a figment, a poetic figment - that is living truth.  There is something of divinity within each of us, my brothers & sisters, that needs cultivation, that needs to come to the surface, that needs to find expression."
President Gordon B Hinckley
Ensign January 1998
I haven't done much cleaning so far this week.  It's been more like running around putting out fires as fast as I can.  This quote is what has been rolling about my head as I drive here and there.  Putting my home in order is the beginning, the outward showing of what my desire is for my heart, my head, my family.  I need and want the whole package.

By being released from my calling with the birth of the twins, I've felt a quiet disconnect from our ward fall upon me.  I think it's mostly natural.  I had a lot of responsibility and suddenly... nothing.  "Nothing but the girls, our house, our family" - I can hear my husband reminding me.  Church itself has been difficult with the girls nursing throughout 2nd hour and not always settling well during Relief Society.  The girls are nearly a year old now, our schedule will be quite different when this nursing business ends.  I've missed visits from my visiting teachers.  I have missed visiting the women on my own list.  I need to be giving service to others.

My testimony hasn't faltered, more like, it has grown stagnate.  I am desirous of it to begin to bloom.

Trouble

After breakfast, Cesar loaded the garbage, recycling, and Hugo into the truck, headed for the dump and errands across the river.  While I tidied up the kitchen and started a load of wash, the girls were loose on the living room floor.

Trouble was in the air, but I hadn't a clue.

The clock soon told me that it was morning nap time, I went to say hello to the girls.  Sabine was sorta behind a chair playing with one of Hugo's astronauts.  Which reminds me that as I fed the girls their breakfast of sweet potato and cereal, Hugo wanted to talk about the girls upcoming birthday.  Ummm, okay.  It's still a ways off, I explained.  His voice was high with excitement and he twirled his fingers in front of his face as he talked.

Hugo:  I'll play with the babies in my room while you make the cake, cupcakes, and cookies!  Right Mom.  Isn't that a good idea Mom?

Me:  (With a big smile on my face) Sure.  I like your idea.  What kind of cupcakes do you think the girls will like?

Hugo:  Strawberry!  The babies will like strawberries.  I like strawberries!

Me:  What do you think the girls will like for their birthday presents?

Hugo:  Astronauts!  And big boy toys!   -he was serious

Me:  What about a doll?

Hugo:  Oh yeah.  You're right Mom.  The babies will like dolls.

 And he walked away.

I scooped up Marlo and snuggled her close as I carried her upstairs to the nursery.  Evie the Cat was napping on the changing table, I booted her to the floor.  1 - 2 - 3 and Marlo was in her crib with the sleep sheep making ocean sounds, shoosha in her smiling mouth,  she snuggled her blanket to her chest and I backed out of the room.

Walking around the chair to scoop up Sabine, she spied me coming and gave me a big, pink grin.  Pink?  Is that Hot Pink?  What, what, where, how?  She had sucked on Hugo's Crayola Marker cardboard packaging and destroyed a corner of it.  What I don't know is where the pink ink came from exactly?  I wondered if a marker had been tucked away with no cover once upon a time, and the ink had leaked into the cardboard, but I couldn't find a marker without a lid or one that was missing.

I am in trouble.  Markers already?  She's 9 months!  I'm beginning to suspect that our Miss Sabine will be the silent, but deadly troublemaker type.  She had me all fooled by framing her sister Marlo early on.  Marlo is our squeaky wheel - for sure, but Sabine might just be the wrench which makes her squeak!

After Dinner

I love my little piglets.
Tonight they ate a heaping bowl of:
1/2 of a raw avocado, smashed
1/2 of a fresh peach, smashed
Mixed with rice cereal and baby milk.
Dessert: Applesauce
Sabine adores her applesauce.
Marlo finds it a tad sour as she scrunches her nose and crinkles her eyes with each spoonful.
The girls dinner reminded me of my sister Maggie and her raw eating habits and silent fast.  Go Mags!

Ms Rachel Epstein Greenstein

This is my friend Rachel.  The last time I saw her, was four long years ago, at NY Presbyterian, just after Hugo's birth.  It was Rachel who hooked me up with the telephone number which led me down my path of fertility with the wonderful, wonderful Dr. Pak Chung.  It was Rachel who became my delivery coach back up person after Cesar had his initial freak out over the possibility of being in the delivery room.   Four months after we became pregnant, it was Rachel's turn to join my bun in the oven status.  It was Rachel who thankfully suffered through my obsession with Spinach & Artichoke Dip and Chicken Alfredo at the Olive Garden.  Four years later she is Marlo and Sabine's personal stylist and has flown in from Louisiana to love on my girls.  Hugo digs her, but he pretends that he doesn't know her name.  Every two seconds he'll ask me, "What's that girl's name?"

The morning of week 9 of my first pregnancy, I prepared to hop the subway up to Dr. Chung's office for my last visit under his care.  Just before I exited out the door, I asked Cesar if he had any last questions he wanted me to ask Dr. Chung.  He replied, "I'm not going to be in the delivery room."  What, what, what?  What do you mean you wont be there???

A long while later, he finally revealed that he'd read an article in the Times about how destructive to a marriage witnessing the birth could be for the husband/father.  What???  That men had only been allowed in the delivery room within the past 30 years or so.  That since the dawn of time, women had gone off into tents or were secluded into their bedroom with massive, semi sound proofed doors between themselves and the husband/father.  No men allowed, except the doc.  He further explained, while my jaw was on the floor and eyes were crossing and hot steam was pouring from my ears, that men who had been in the delivery room with their wives had been documented to have suffered war like trauma.  (The man/husband/father, had suffered war like trauma??)  And that the couples sex life was forever doomed.  Done and over with.  Done, done, done.

I left our apartment - furious.  I couldn't believe what I'd just heard coming out of my husbands mouth.  I couldn't believe that he believed what he had said to me.  I wanted to track down and decapitate the articles author.

Rachel became my person to call when the baby was on it's way.  Knowing that I had designated this job to someone other than himself, gave Cesar the comfort he needed.

Jump ahead 9 months later... I felt kinda odd one Saturday evening.  Cesar was working and well, I just thought that maybe I should get cleaned up.  While showering my water broke.  How did I know this?  It was unmistakable.  I called the Doc, I called Cesar, I called our parents, and I packed my bag.  When Cesar arrived home he was giddy like a little kid.  He hustled me into the truck and drove like a maniac through the City.  I hollered at him to slow down, that he was gonna get a ticket.  He said, "If we get pulled over, you grab your belly and go haaaa oooooooo, haaaa oooooooo, haaa oooooooo!"  I think he wanted to get pulled over.  I think that being in the movie business had gone to his head and he wanted a police escort to the hospital!

Twenty blocks later, Cesar asked me to quick call Rachel.  Nope.  I had decided that he was going to be the one to hold my hand.  And he did.  He even looked, when we both agreed that he shouldn't.  It happened during mid push for me.  I heard him call out, "It's the coolest!"  What, what what?  After all these past months, you're looking??  The Doc asked if he wanted to cut the cord and Cesar politely declined.  Later, he said he wished he had.  Three and a half years later, he held my hand and comforted me in a delivery room once more.  He also peeked over the drape.  What, what what??  The Docs gave him the chance to cut the cord again, times two, but once more, declined.  Did I care?  No.  I was simply glad that he was there for me.

Fair Time

We went to "Car Load Night" at our county fair.  Cesar wasn't sure he wanted to go, the whole fair thing isn't his sort of fun but, he had a great time!  I made him go on all the rides with Hugo, he loved it.  I made him eat sausage and peppers, he loved it.  I made him slurp down a massive lemonade, all by his lonesome.  And, when he asked what sort of treat he could get for me... I requested a funnel cake and sweet as can be, he was off to find one for me.  Mmmmmm, funnel cake!  When I was busy taking pics of the kids and following our combined tribe through the crowd of kids, strollers and pregnant moms, most of my funnel cake magically disappeared.  And it did not disappear into my tummy, or Hugo's!

Early this morning, Sabine fell out of our bed and got her first goose egg and shiner.  Lovely.

A corndog.  This is the reason I wanted to go to the fair.  Yum, yum, yum!

Cesar thought the fun house experience was a load of c-r-a-p.
Hugo said it was AWESOME!
Who should I believe?!

I love their faces in these pics.  Future roller coaster, fair goin' addicts these two are.

Upon exiting the ride Hugo again proclaimed it to be, "AWESOME!"

Hugo threw a huge fit when he was ditched by his girl,
who wanted wanted to sit with her cousin
for at least one ride.

Firework Magic

One last ride for Papa, he was pretty sleepy by this time.

Sweet Sabine slept most of the evening away in her car seat while Miss Marlo didn't miss a beat.
I rode the last ride of the night.  I took Hugo, his girl and her cousin into the spinning dragons and I spun us all like mad.  The kids and I all screamed our lungs out to the point that I started to imagine I was in Willy Wonka's boat on that crazy river wanting, begging to get off and out before we all barfed or, lost our minds.  It was awesome.  We all needed a good scrub down, when it was all over, with hand sanitizer after spinning the very sticky wheel.  Shaka to the rescue.  I love county fairs!
